Sulfonic Acid Export

Exporting sulfonic acid is essential for many major detergent manufacturers as it is one of the most important raw materials for detergents. Sulfonic acid (linear alkyl benzene sulfonic acid or LABSA) is a substance used as the main surfactant agent in the composition of many detergent products, including liquids and powders. It is the main cause of the cleaning properties in these products. In other words, the main role of cleaning, removing dirt and stains, and also removing fat in detergent products is the responsibility of a family of chemical compounds called surfactants.

Surfactants are divided into four categories based on their electric charge in their hydrophilic part, including anionic, cationic, nonionic, and amphoteric. Based on the nature and expected performance of a detergent product and according to the formulation experts in research and development laboratories, each of the above surfactants is used separately or in combination with each other in a detergent product. Among them, the highest and most important role in detergent products belongs to anionic surfactants and they make up an average of 10 to 25 percent of the formulation of various detergent products.

Chemical Structure of Sulfonic Acid and its Range of Applications

Sulfonic acid 97% is an organic compound from the group of sulfur-containing organic compounds with the formula RC6H4−S(=O)2−OH, where R is an alkyl or allyl group attached to the benzene ring and S(=O)2−OH is the sulfonic hydroxide group. To describe it more accurately, the chemical structure of these substances consists of two parts: a hydrophobic or water-repellent part and a hydrophilic or water-loving part. The hydrophobic part is made up of an organic chain that is insoluble in water and other polar solvents, but soluble in non-polar solvents and organic compounds. On the other hand, the hydrophilic part, unlike the hydrophobic part, is soluble in polar solvents, including water. This unique feature of these compounds gives them a special ability in the process of cleaning and removing dirt.

It should be noted that most dirt and stains on clothes, dishes, human bodies, kitchen surfaces, and similar items in the human living environment are caused by organic compounds such as fat, protein, and hydrocarbon compounds such as cellulose and starch. Even many non-organic pollutants such as dust and car exhaust stick to the human body and clothing due to the above compounds.

How Sulfonic Acid Works in Detergent Production

As we know, organic compounds are notsoluble in water. Therefore, removing them from the human body and other equipment used in daily life is not possible with pure water alone. In other words, if the process of dissolving in solvents such as water does not occur, the dirt will not separate from the desired surfaces, and the cleaning process will not be achieved.

Surfactants, including sulfonic acid, with the ability to simultaneously dissolve in water as a hydrophilic part and have the ability to dissolve organic dirt as a hydrophobic part, can separate organic compounds from the surfaces and prevent them from reattaching to the cleaned surfaces while remaining suspended in water. The mechanism of action of surfactants occurs through reducing the surface tension in the water-air and organic–cleaned surfaces. By reducing the surface tension in the two desired areas, surfactants cause the organic matter to detach from the surfaces and easily submerge in water. Of course, surfactants also have other properties such as emulsification, foaming, coagulation, as well as disinfection. Therefore, detergent-producing companies are seeking to buy 97% sulfonic acid.

RAAG Trading Company is the best option for a reliable and economical purchase of sulfonic acid for export.

The highest consumption of surfactants in the detergent family belongs to the anionic group. Typically, in the formulation of detergent products, anionic surfactants, which have the main role in cleaning, are used along with other surfactants as helpers or modifiers to enhance their properties. Therefore, in the formulation of detergent products, various useful raw materials, including two or three types of surfactants, are used to achieve different properties such as foaming, shine, softness, and smoothness, as well as to prevent re-deposition on surfaces and to provide properties such as tamponade and protection for skin, clothing, and washing equipment such as washing machines.

General Characteristics of 97% Sulfonic Acid:

Production Method of Sulfonic Acid:

In brief, in the sulfonation process, the dry air unit provides the required air for combining with sulfur, which is free of moisture and has a dew point of up to minus 80 degrees Celsius. This is achieved with the help of equipment such as a blower, an ethylene glycol tower, a chiller, and a silica gel tower. Then, in another section of the plant and in the sulfur burning furnace, the molten sulfur is combined (burned) with dry air, and SO2 gas is produced. The SO2 gas is then directed to special converters equipped with specific catalysts, where it is combined with oxygen and creates SO3 gas. This gas is subsequently combined in special reactors with linear alkyl benzene or fatty alcohol that has been ethoxylated, and finally produces organic sulfonic acid or lauric acid. Some of the SO2 and SO3 gases do not enter into the reaction with the organic chain, and are trapped and prevented from entering the environment by the electrostatic filter and scrubber tower filled with ash.

After gas removal and then the neutralization process, the organic acid is converted into the final product with a purity of 97%, and is stored in tanks and the production process is continuously controlled by the laboratory unit. This plant has a high level of automation and requires minimal human intervention, and a high volume of production is carried out with minimal staff.

Environmental Considerations and Safety Information for Sulfonic Acid:

Most anionic surfactants, including LABSA, are non-toxic. However, long-term exposure to these surfactants can cause irritation and damage to the skin by disrupting the lipid membrane. On the other hand, the biodegradability of the surfactant hydrocarbon group determines the extent of its environmental impact. Due to the hazardous nature of sulfonic acid, workers must pay attention to the following points when working with this substance because of its acidic properties, which can cause corrosion:

1- The use of special clothing, gloves, shoes, and masks is mandatory when working with this acid. Sulfonic acid can cause severe eye burns and sometimes blindness. If this substance comes into contact with your eyes, rinse your eyes with warm water for 15 minutes and then quickly seek medical attention.

2- Avoid breathing in this product. Sulfonic acid vapors can damage the respiratory system. Therefore, if you inhale these vapors, quickly leave the laboratory environment. In many cases, going out into the open air neutralizes the undesired effects of sulfonic acid vapors. However, if respiratory problems persist, use an oxygen mask.

3- Due to the flammability of sulfonic acid, in case of fire, use water spray, chemical dry powder, or cooling foam.

4- Safety MSDS notes for sulfonic acid: If you use sulfonic acid, quickly drink some milk along with a neutralizing liquid such as magnesium and keep your head up to prevent acid from entering your lungs.

Due to the hazards associated with the use of sulfonic acid in high purity, it is better to observe all safety precautions for exporting sulfonic acid.

Applications of Sulfonic Acid:

The application of 97% sulfonic acid in the detergent industry is as a surfactant for removing impurities and fats from various surfaces. A surfactant is made up of two parts, a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic part. The hydrophobic part surrounds non-polar molecules, and the hydrophilic part, by bonding with the solvent molecules (water), can take care of the stain removal action in detergents. Due to this property, sulfonic acid is used to produce various detergents, cleaners, and hygiene powders and liquids. This acid is the most important and widely used substance in the liquid detergent formula and is used as a cleanser and degreaser that is effective in removing stains.

By using this acid, many stain andgrease removers are produced in the manufacturing industry. Additionally, sulfonic acid is used as a lubricant, emulsifier, and anti-corrosion additive in various industries.

Storage Conditions for Sulfonic Acid:

Another safety consideration when working with sulfonic acid is its storage conditions. Since this acid has a high corrosive power, its storage containers must be corrosion-resistant. In addition, sulfonic acid should be stored away from sunlight and in cool storage facilities (with ventilation).
